Dr. Smith began her practice in 2002 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. She was in clinical practice in Vancouver for 10 years prior to moving to Cascade Orthopaedics in 2012. She graduated with honors from Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, Canada where she played softball. She completed her medical degree and orthopaedic surgery residency at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. She then completed two hand and upper extremity fellowships, one at the UBC and the second at the Institut Kaplan in Barcelona, Spain. Following her training, Dr. Smith joined the Vancouver Bone and Joint Clinic at St. Paul’s Hospital as well as the Department of Orthopaedics at the UBC as a Clinical Associate Professor. Her clinical practice involved treating complex hand, wrist and elbow disorders in an academic setting while teaching medical students, orthopaedic surgery residents and upper extremity fellows. During her 10 years in practice in Vancouver, she was active in the orthopaedic community. She was the President of the British Columbia Orthopaedic Association and an executive member of the Society of Specialist Physicians and Surgeons of the British Columbia Medical Association. She was involved locally at St. Paul’s Hospital on the Medical Advisory Committee and an executive member of the Medical Staff. At the university level, she was actively involved in curriculum development for both the medical school and orthopaedic surgery residency programs. She is a member of the Canadian Medical Assistance Team providing medical care in disaster stricken areas. She provided emergency orthopaedic care both in Pakistan in 2005 and Haiti in 2010 following earthquakes. Dr. Smith enjoys a wide variety of sporting activities including hockey, softball and golf. She has had the opportunity to play hockey recreationally on an international basis in several countries including Canada, Finland, Russia and Slovenia. She strives to help patients minimize downtime following an injury and return to sport and recreation.
